In a game where both offenses came to play, the Jaguars (2-2) outlasted Santiago, ranked 4th in CIF Friday night 49-29. The Jaguars scored on the first five possessions of the first half to take the lead and never looked back. An outstanding effort put on by the Jaguars’ offensive line helped pace Matt Navarro, Justin Mills, and Frankie Partida on the ground. Quarterback Brian Murrietta threw a touchdown pass to Aaron Amrine and ran for two more.
Defensively, the Jaguars showed poise and made the right adjustments to eventually stymie the Cavaliers. Ricardo Cachua put pressure on Santiago’s quarterback all night recording three sacks. Other defensive standouts include Flavio Hernandez who finished with two interceptions and Robert Nunez who led the team in tackles. The Jaguars look to build on this momentum next week, when the Jaguars host Calvary Chapel.

On September 25th, the Junior Varsity Jaguars (2-1) traveled to Santiago High for their next game. The Jaguars were looking to get back on track after their first loss last week. It didn’t take long. Santiago received the opening kick. The Jaguar defense stopped the Cavaliers on three offensive plays and blocked the fourth down punt into the end zone for a touchback. The Jaguar offense got the ball and scored quickly, thanks to the great field position provided by the defense. Mynor Garcia started the scoring with a 4 yard plunge into the end zone and the PAT was converted by kicker Johnny Miranda, making the score 7-0 early in the first quarter. The Jaguars never looked back. At halftime the score was 21-0 in favor of the Jaguars.
The defense, led by Jesus De La Torre, Luis Lopez, Trevor Cormier, and Robert Fernandez, held the Cavalier offense out of the end zone for the entire game. The Jaguar offense followed the lead of the defense and scored three more touchdowns on runs by Josh Espinoza, Robert Soncrant Jr., and Omar Delgado. The last touchdown came from the defense. After the Cavalier quarterback fumbled the ball during a sack, Jesus De La Torre scooped up the fumble and returned it for a 15 yard touchdown. On the ensuing PAT, the snap went high and holder Hector Diaz ran right into the end zone. Final score 36-0.

On September 25, the Freshmen Jaguars hosted the Santiago Cavaliers from Garden Grove. The Jaguars started the scoring early and often putting 28 points on the board before half time. After halftime, the scoring continued with another 27 points from the reserves to end the game 55-0. Touchdowns were scored by Gabriel Roa (3), Robert Sevilla (2), Ilisiah Thomas (1), Ricardo Solorio(1) and Christian Cordova (1).

Laguna Hills 28 Final Score

The Jaguars (1-2) came out hitting in a disappointing loss to Laguna Hills on Friday night 28-17. Playing on the road against the number one team in the division was a tall order, but the Jaguars did not back down. The two teams’ defenses matched each other early recording ‘three and outs” in the first five possessions. Laguna Hills struck first with one of several big plays as their quarterback scrambled for the first touchdown. Other big plays paced Laguna Hills the rest of the night.
The Jaguars offensive execution came alive as Brian Murrietta connected with Nick Calhoun for two touchdown passes. Great pass protection by the offensive line and run fakes by the running backs allowed Murrietta to stand in the pocket. Johnny Miranda got his name in the record books by kicking a 35 yard field goal. The Jaguars look to rebound against Santiago next week.

Laguna Hills 14 Final Score

On September 18, 2008, the Junior Varsity Jaguars had there home opener versus the Laguna Hills Hawks. The Jaguars got off to a bad start throwing an interception on their first drive of the game. The Hawks capitalized on the Jaguar mistake scoring on a trick play to go on top 6-0 early in the first quarter. After converting the PAT, the score was 7-0. The two defensive squads traded turns on the field, allowing little offense for both teams. Finally, late in the second quarter, the Jaguars put together a drive of there own. Starting at there own 35 yard line, the Jaguars ran several plays and eventually scored when QB Joseph Mejia ran a QB keep from the two yard line. The PAT was not converted when the snap was fumbled by the Jaguars. The score was 7-6 going into halftime.
The second half was much like the first- a defensive battle. The Hawks scored first midway through the third quarter and converted the extra point. The score was now 14-6. The Jaguars then returned the kick to the Hawks forty. Five plays later, at the end of the third quarter, the Jaguars scored on a five yard run by Josh Espinoza. The Jaguars went for two but were held out of the end zone by the Hawks. The score was 14-12. The Jaguars tried to put on a late fourth quarter drive but were denied and turned the ball over on downs. The Hawks then ran out the clock. Final score 14-12.

On September 18, the Segerstrom Jaguar freshmen team traveled to South County to face the Laguna Hills Hawks. The Jaguars took the opening drive and marched 60 yards ending with a touchdown by wing back Jimmy Gutierrez. However, on the Hawks first offensive drive, the Hawks’ quarterback connects with a wide receiver resulting in a 50 yards touchdown which makes the score 7 to 7. On their next two drives, the Jaguars could not protect the ball resulting in 2 lost fumbles. Sensing the struggles of the offense, the defense stepped up by intercepting the Hawks four times ending any chances of sustaining a drive. Corners Emmanuel Akonor and Elisha Thomas also stepped up their game by almost intercept 1 pass and preventing any more receivers to make a completion. In the second half, the defense step up and prevented the Hawks from scoring with the offense struggles to move the ball. The game end with a 13 to 7 victory for the Jaguars to bring their preseason record to 3 wins and no loses.

The Jaguars (1-1) pulled off an exciting victory versus the visiting Centurions on their home opener 42-0 Friday night. In a battle of cross town rivals, the Jaguars held strong, limiting the Centurions to 158 yards of total offense. This great defensive effort was led by Flavio Hernandez, Tim Morales, and Justin Mills who forced three turnovers. Offensively, Brian Murrietta connected with Nicalaus Powell-Calhoun for an 87 yard touchdown pass to get the Jaguars going. Century’s defense stymied the Jaguars early, but Murrietta’s leadership kept his team on track. The offensive line began to click allowing the Jaguars’ running backs to excel. Great performances were turned in by Aaron Amrine and Gary Ferman who both had amazing touchdown runs.

SEGERSTROM JV vs. CENTURY

On September 11, 2008, the Junior Varsity squad from Segerstrom High School played another road game against the Century High Centurions. The Jaguars scored on their opening drive with a touchdown run by Robert Soncrant Jr. from 18 yards out putting the Jaguars up 7-0 with over 5 minutes left in the first quarter. The Jaguars did not stop there. After a defensive stand lead by defensive end Hector Diaz and linebacker Robert Fernandez, the offense got the ball back with great field position. Five plays later, the Jaguars scored on a run up the middle by running back Josh “Thumper” Espinoza as the quarter came to an end. Midway through the second quarter, the Jaguars punched in another TD on the legs of Robert Soncrant Jr. The Jaguars missed the ensuing PAT when Johnny Miranda’s kicked sailed wide of the post. At halftime the Jaguars lead 20-0.
The offense was not done yet. On the first drive of the third quarter the Jaguars scored again on the legs of running back Angel Vaglienty from 15 yards out. The PAT was good making the score 27-0. The Centurions had little offense up to this point but late in the third quarter they scored on a 38 yard run and converted the PAT making the score 27-7. On the ensuing kick off Robert Soncrant Jr. returned the kick 98 yards for a touchdown. Again the Jaguars failed to convert the PAT making the score 33-7. The Jaguars scored again late in the fourth quarter on a run by running back Marvin Escobar. Kicker Johnny Miranda converted the PAT making the final score 40-7 and gave the JV Jaguars their second victory of the season.

On September 11, 2008, the Segerstrom Jaguar freshmen team played in their home opener versus Century High School. It did not take the Jaguars long to score as Steven Hernandez took the opening kick off and ran 70 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Alfredo Contreras kicked the extra point to put the Jaguars up by seven. After the ensuing kick-off, the Century Centurions lost the football on a fumble by the fullback. The Jaguars took over at the 33 yard line and scored on their first offensive play when halfback Robert Sevilla took the ball and ran for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Jaguars led by fourteen with only about one minute off the clock. The Centurions did put together a small drive only to be forced to punt by the Jaguar defense. The punter was rushed into making a bad punt in which linebacker Jonathan Valle picked up the ball and ran 50 yards for another Jaguar touchdown. With a good extra point, the Jaguars were up 21 to nothing over the Centurion of Century. The next score would come from a pass from quarterback Aaron Morales to Vincent Aranda for a 25 yard touchdown and with the extra point, the Jaguars led 28 to nothing going into the half. In the second half, the scoring continued with a 15 yard touchdown run by Gabriel Roa to make it 34 to nothing, followed by another touchdown from Dean Ortega to make the final score 40 to nothing in favor of the Jaguars.

Varsity vs. Tehachapi

Jaguars lose their season opener 17-12
CLICK HERE to view all the pictures! The Jaguars opened up their 2008 football season with a hard fought battle at Tehachapi ending in a 17 – 12 loss. Playing their first week zero game in school history, the Jaguars struggled early. The Tehachapi Warriors, defending Central Division CIF champions, took advantage of early miscues to score 17 unanswered points. After several adjustments, the Jaguars defense shut out the Warriors in the second half.
The offense came to life with the help of the Jaguars’ special teams in the third quarter. Solid coverage by the punt team and a great punt return established good field position. Brian Murrietta and Frankie Partida both added rushing touchdowns for the Jaguars.

JV JAGS WIN OPENER 6-3 over Tehachapi. The Segerstrom Junior Varsity team traveled to Tehachapi for their week zero game versus the Braves. The game started with an opening drive by the Tehachapi Braves starting at their own twenty and driving the length of the field while using up most of the first quarter clock. The Jaguar defense stopped them at our twenty-five yard line causing the Braves to settle for a field goal. From the closing moments of the first quarter until midway through the fourth quarter the defensive units from both squads put up an epic battle keeping the score at 3-0 in favor of the Braves.
At the 8 minute mark of the fourth quarter, the Jaguars broke through the Brave defense and scored. The Jaguars drive at their own thirty yard line. The Jaguars marched down the field lead by quarterback Max Padilla and behind the running of Robert Soncrant Jr., Josh Espinoza, and Roland De La Cruz. With just under two minutes left in the game, Padilla connected with De La Cruz for an 18 yard touchdown pass. The ensuing extra point by Jose Diaz sailed wide right, leaving the score at 6-3. The Braves got the ball back with 1:45 on the clock, but the Jaguar defense stood firm. Lead by linebackers Jesus De La Torre and Andrew Luevano, the Jaguars stopped the Braves advance at the Jaguar forty. The Jaguars took over after a failed fourth down attempt and ran out the clock to end the game leaving Tehachapi with their first victory.

Freshmen vs. Tehachapi 14-6 JAGS WIN SEASON OPENERThe Segerstrom Jaguar freshmen football team traveled to Tehachapi to compete in a week zero contest. The Tehachapi Indians (Tehachapi Warriors Freshmen Team) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead before the young Jaguars responded with a pass from quarterback Steven Hernandez to tight end Ruben Martinez. The defense, lead by, Joseph Castro and Gabriel Roa, stepped up to prevent the Indians from scoring going in to the half. At half time, the score was 14-6. After half time, the Jaguar offense exploded for 20 unanswered points starting with a 1 yard TD run by fullback Gabriel Roa after an interception by middle linebacker Joseph Castro which he returns to the Indian’s 1 yard line. Other scores came from a pass from quarterback Aaron Morales to Vincent Aranda and a 20 yards run by half back Robert Sevilla. The Jaguar, encouraged by the production of the offense, stepped up and prevented the Indians from moving the ball and getting on the board. When the game was over, the Jaguar overcame a 0-14 start to win 26-14, giving the young Jaguar squad their 1st win of the season. The Offensive Player of the Game went to Gabriel Roa, the Defensive Player of the Game went to Joseph Castro, the Line Player of the Game went to Ruben Martinez, and the Scout Player of the Week went to Ulises Garcia.
